As an understanding of "sustainability" and its application to the Olympic Games evolves, this study considered the sustainability objectives and outcomes of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in comparison to the sustainability plans for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Using a weighted sum assessment, the authors compared the sustainability scores for each host city's sustainability plans on along the various dimensions found in the Rio 2016 sustainability plan. Stories that have emerged from Rio 2016 legacies may possibly be used to help define and predict sustainable impacts from future Olympic host cities.
