The study focused on the institutional forces shaping environmental sustainability efforts in the major sport leagues in North America. Results indicated that media played a key role in the type and extend to which sport organizations incorporated environmental initiatives within their daily business practices. Data also illustrated some of the benefits related to sustainability efforts such as averting legal recourse, saving money and building stronger relationships with stakeholders. Overall, scrutiny, regulation, normative and associative pressures contributed to the diffusion of environmentally friendly initiatives among sport organizations.
