What is the Carbon Footprint of the English Premier League?

Updated: Apr 4, 2025

In this study, the authors assessed the carbon footprint of English Premier League's (EPL) clubs’ travel patterns. Using domestic travel data from all 20 clubs during the 2016/2017 season as a proxy for analysis, the researchers estimated that EPL clubs produced about 1,134 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent as a result of their travel, where transportation accounts for 61% of the carbon footprint with air travel being the most widespread means of transportation. Based on these results, the authors argue that a careful review of the current corporate travel and procurement practices in the EPL clubs is necessary in order to optimize the travel itineraries, prioritize more climate-benign modes of transport, and contract budget accommodation providers with the “green” credentials.
